A few years before he started making tentpole superhero movies like Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad, writer/director James Gunn made this underseen gem. He takes a variety of sci-fi and horror influences — The Blob (1958), The Deadly Spawn (1983), and The Puppet Masters (1994) to name but a few — and, along with a game cast and an amazing special effects team, makes a very James Gunn movie from it — a movie that is funny, scary, gross, and heartfelt, occasionally all at the same time.
