Filmmaking director/producer team Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin followed up their hugely popular hit movie Independence Day with a remake of the classic kaiju film Godzilla. Both Independence Day and Godzilla (1998) are epic sci-fi disaster movies, but the latter (though it turned a modest profit) never attained the massive popularity of the former. Lack of enthusiasm for the 1998 Godzilla movie from audiences and theater owners led the studio behind the film, TriStar, to abandon the sequel they had planned.
